Another great episode Eddy and David.

Senator McKenzie can spare us the fake outrage. Loyalty should be to the Australian public and not a foreign sovereign. Civility politics favours the status quo of the already powerful and narrows the field of language. And the media and political class who profess Australian ‘larrikin’ identity quickly become pearl clutching sycophants when the King comes to Australia. Australia is unlikely to move to a republic because our leaders love to be dined and wined in Buckingham Palace.

The outcome of the ACT Election shows the power of proportional representation to deliver diverse voices. The Greens remain a strong force in the Assembly and the Canberra Liberals remain impotent after failing to destroy public transport investments again. The rise of independents in Canberra after 20 years shows a desire for diverse views.

The decisive victory of Jacqui Scruby in the Pittwater by election shows a hunger for more local representation and the poor decision of the Liberals to parachute someone who doesn’t live in the electorate into the preselection.

Thanks again John for another insightful comment. After the kerfuffle over citizenship with bye-elections everywhere it seems to me that the constitution at least implies loyalty to the crown, personified by the person of the king or his representative the governor general, rather than the person themself. Senator McKenzie seems to know about as much constitutional technicality as I know the ins and outs of Rugby Union - very little. (Not a slam against fans of the game I just don’t know anything about it. But a senator should have a good working knowledge of the constitution. And ethics really.

And Queensland tomorrow is going to be j treating. I suspect we may see more of the plurality of independents and smaller parties rather than liberal and Labor. It’s beyond clear that the major parties are in terminal decline.

I hope too for more voices in the QLD parliament beyond the two main parties.

That being said, Steven Miles’ and QLD Labor Party has run a vigorous campaign against the LNP with genuinely good ideas, and should be commended for it. If more ALP leaders ran on ideas like Miles, I’d be more inclined to support them.
