In an era where the personal is political and the global is local, foreign policy silence and trying to appease one group over another, might not be a safe political strategy anymore.
Brilliantly well said 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻The flagrant moral bankruptcy of both major parties could not be more clearly on display, as both the Albanese govt and the Opposition continue their deafening silence regarding the genocide occurring in Palestine , as though this barbarism is of no concern to them . The pesky details of International Law appear not to bother them in the slightest. It must be remembered that both the FM and the PM found that they had no time to meet with Francesca Albanese when she visited Australia last year for a NPC address . Such breathtaking lack of respect on their part , but no doubt very pleasing for the Zionist lobby groups . Do they imagine that they can “hard hat and hi viz” their way through this election without deigning to mention a source of world public outrage? There are no words to describe the shame of this abandonment of leadership .
"... is aware that any criticism of Israel can and will be quickly weaponised as an accusation of antisemitism..."
Yes attackers willingly confuse anti Israel / anti Zionist views with anti semitism. Unfortunately saying things like "Some of my best friends are Jewish but they should not kill children" is a bad place to start.
As you point out, Australia's politicians are too timid to take a real stand against the immoral and seemingly wanton killing of Gazan civilians. In the Trump context too they are too timid to have a real stance and preparation to fight back against Trumpism. While we could learn from Mark Carney in Canada we don't yet have a real existential threat, but I am sure it will come.
Its almost as if we are shrinking into the corner hoping to not to be seen.
The Greens could win McNamara - it would only take a couple of thousand voters to switch to them. They have already done it in Bandt's own Melbourne seat and in central Brisbane.
People of a Jewish background are only 0.5% of Australians, so the Jewish vote is not large. Compare that with the 5% of Chinese-Australians, for example. The Chinese are far more important than Jews in Australia.
The greens just might be starting to make the headway they’ve been promising for the last twenty years or so. The biggest voting bloc is going to be young people - those under 35 - and the polls are a bit all over the place. Most young people tend green. But there’s a significant minority of young men ((18-25) whose andrew Tate/joe Rogan informed politics will push them towards Dutton or even past. But having said that how much of that is noise
And the big challenge of the Greens is they have to try and consolidate their not insignificant support.
The notable thing about the Jewish vote is that Israel has support from some christians and some agnostics and atheists. So while the Jewish population is tiny it’s supported by a group of non Jewish people. This tends to explain why certain local members have come out in favour of the genocide even if that’s not what they meant.
This election is not dull even if its main candidates don’t inspire. DL
The Greens are at 13% which is solid and slightly up on past results.
The Independents are also solid. I'm currently staying in Dr Sophie Scamps' electorate of Mackellar in Sydney and she is everywhere here - I expect her to hold easily.
Dutton is losing. Either Labor gets a bare majority or it gets back with Greens/Independents support. Either way, Albanese will have to be bolder on Gaza.

At last! Some fearless reporting. Thank you for writing with strength and eloquence what do many of us are feeling.
Spot on and well said.
